Sunlight reflected off the golden head,
Sinewy she sat on the rocky edge,
She was waiting to hear the Captain's call,
From a distant ship's regal hull.
Once, twice she knew she heard it right,
But wait! It was already past midnight,
The aurora lights guided her keen sight,
As she searched for the familiar face.
She swam through the breaking waves,
And stopped just as she reached the ledge,
Slivers of moonlight caught her arching back,
As she reached out in greed to embrace.
In the blindness of the night she sought too hard,
Ignorant and blissful she let down her guard,
She played her hand to the last card,
But hold on! She thought a second thought!
The Captain was a Captain but not the same one,
He was a Pirate, a good one, a lone maritime soul!
The dawn saw the last of the gold and the tail,
As it disappered once more beneath the azure waves.
And that's the end of the mermaid's tale!
